Mineral Resources have commonly been estimated through the kriging method that assigns weights to the samples based on variogram distance to the estimation point without considering their values. More robust estimators such as spatial copulas are promising tools because they consider both distance and sample values in determining weights. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Gaussian copulas (GC) by estimating the copper grade values in the Sungun porphyry copper deposit located in Iran. Performance of the method was compared to ordinary kriging (OK) and indicator kriging (IK) by running the Jackknife test of cross-validation. The metrics used in measuring performance of the methods are global accuracy and precision of the distribution of the estimates, error statistics, and variability for globally accurate and precise estimates. The case study shows advantages of GC over OK and IK by producing globally accurate and precise estimates with acceptable error statistics and variability.

This investigation centers on the Qarah Tappeh copper deposit, situated in the northern region of West Azerbaijan province, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Maku city. The primary objective of the study is to comprehensively examine the study area through the analysis of 253 lithogeochemical samples, and assessing reserves utilizing ordinary kriging, guided by subsurface data obtained from 14 boreholes totaling 909.2 meters. The concentration–volume (C–V) multifractal modeling approach was employed to estimate the deposit's reserve. The findings of this research project indicate an estimated 988,604 tons of the deposit with an average grade of 0.14%. Through the analysis of log–log plots within the C–V relationship, threshold values signifying various copper (Cu) concentrations were identified. These plots revealed a pronounced power-law correlation between Cu concentrations and their corresponding volumes, with arrows denoting four specific threshold values. Utilizing this analytical methodology, mineralized zones were classified into five distinct categories: high (>0.42%), above-average (0.35-0.42%), average (0.27-0.35%), below-average (0.14-0.27%), and low (<0.14%) mineralized zones.

In this paper, we aim to achieve two specific objectives. The first one is to examine the applicability of wavelet neural network (WNN) technique in ore grade estimation, which is based on integration between wavelet theory and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Different wavelets are applied as activation functions to estimate Cu grade of borehole data in the hypogene zone of porphyry ore deposit, Shahr-e-Babak district, SE Iran. WNN parameters such as dilation and translation are fixed and only the weights of the network are optimized during its learning process. The efficacy of this type of network in function learning and estimation is compared with Ordinary Kriging (OK). Secondly, we aim to delineate the potassic and phyllic alteration regions in the hypogene zone of Cu porphyry deposit based on the estimation obtained of WNN and OK methods, and utilize Concentration–Volume (C–V) fractal model. In this regard, at first C–V log–log plots are generated based on the results of OK and WNN. The plots then are used to determine the Cu threshold values of the alteration zones. To investigate the correlation between geological model and C-V fractal results, the log ratio matrix is applied. The results showed that, Cu values less than 1.1% from WNN have more overlapped voxels with phyllic alteration zone by overall accuracy (OA) of 0.74. Spatial correlation between the potassic alteration zones resulted from 3D geological modeling and high concentration zones in C-V fractal model showed that the alteration zone has Cu values between 1.1% and 2.2% with OA of 0.72 and finally have an appropriate overlap with Cu values greater than 2.2% with OA of 0.7. Generally, the results showed that the WNN (Morlet activation function) with OA greater than OK can be can be a suitable and robust tool for quantitative modeling of alteration zones, instead of qualitative methods.

In this paper, we aim to achieve two specific objectives. The first one is to examine the applicability of the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) technique in ore grade estimation. Different training algorithms and numbers of hidden neurons are applied to estimate Cu grade of borehole data in the hypogene zone of porphyry copper-gold deposit, Masjed-Daghi, East Azerbaijan Province (Iran). The efficacy of ANNs in function-learning and estimation is compared with ordinary kriging (OK). As the kriging algorithms smooth the data, their applicability in the pre-processing of data for fractal analysis is not conducive. ANNs can be introduced as an alternative for this kind of problem. Secondly, we aim to delineate the potassic and phyllic alteration regions in the hypogene zone of Cu-Au porphyry deposit based on the estimation obtained by the ANNs and OK methods, and utilize the Concentration-Volume (C-V) fractal model. In this regard, at first, C-V log-log is generated based on the ANN results. The plots are then used to determine the Cu threshold values for the alteration zones. To investigate the correlation between the geological model and C-V fractal results, the log ratio matrix is applied. The results obtained show that Cu values less than 0.38% from ANNs have more overlapped voxels with phyllic alteration zone by an overall accuracy of 0.72. Spatial correlation between the potassic alteration zones resulting from 3D geological modeling and high concentration zones in C-V fractal model show that Cu values greater than 0.38% have more voxels overlapped with the potassic alteration zone by an overall accuracy of 0.76. Generally, the results obtained show that a combination of the ANNs and C-V fractal methods can be a suitable and robust tool for quantitative modeling of alteration zones instead of the qualitative methods.

Delineation of oxide and sulfide zones in mineral deposits, especially in gold deposits, is one of the most essential steps in an exploration project that has been traditionally carried out using the drilling results. Since in most mineral exploration projects there is a limited drilling dataset, application of geophysical data can reduce the error in delineation of the sulfide and oxide zones. For this purpose, we produced a 3D model of Induced Polarization (IP) data using the ordinary kriging technique. Then the modelling results were compared with the drilling data. The results obtained showed that the 3D geophysical models would properly delineate the sulfide and oxides zones. This work presents a new application of the IP results for separation of these zones. In addition, the conducted variography in this work suggests reducing the profile spacing of dipole-dipole IP arrays down to 25 m. This would properly enrich the integration of geophysical and geological results in the modelling of gold deposits.

In this paper, we aim to present a quantitative modeling for delineating the alteration zones and lithological units in the hypogene zone of Masjed-Daghi Cu-Au porphyry deposit (NW Iran) based on the drill core data. The main goal of this work is to apply Ordinary Kriging (OK) and concentration-volume (C-V) fractal model based on Cu grades in order to separate the different alteration zones and lithological units. Initially, anisotropy was investigated and modeled based on calculating the experimental semi-variograms of the Cu values, and the main variography directions were identified and evaluated. Then a block model of the Cu grades was generated using the kriging, and the estimation obtained for OK was applied to the C-V fractal model. The C–V log–log plot based on the estimation method represents the various alteration and lithological zones via threshold values. The comparison and interpretation of the alteration zones and lithological units based on the C–V fractal modeling proved that the method was acceptable and capable of correctly delineating the alteration and lithological units. Regarding the correlation derived from log ratio matrix (used to compare the geological model with the C-V fractal results), it was observed that Cu values less than 0.4% were obtained for OK overlapped voxels with the phyllic alteration zone by an overall accuracy (OA) of 0.737. The spatial correlation between the potassic alteration zones resulting from a 3D geological modeling and the high concentration zones in the C-V fractal model based on OK indicated that the alteration zone contained Cu values greater than 0.4% with OA of 0.791. Also using this method, trustworthy results were obtained for the rock units.

The purpose of this work is to compare the linear and non-linear kriging methods in the mineral resource estimation of the Qolqoleh gold deposit in Saqqez, NW Iran. Considering the fact that the gold distribution is positively skewed and has a significant difference with a normal curve, a geostatistical estimation is complicated in these cases. Linear kriging, as a resource estimation method, can be problematic and gives an unrealistic gold grade. In order to check and correct the errors in the linear methods, the non-linear kriging method has been deployed. One of the applicant's non-linear estimation methods is Indicator Kriging (IK). The IK method converts grade values into binary units of 0 and 1 using multiple thresholds that can be selected by the number-size (N-S) fractal model. The N-S model identifies important and critical thresholds based on the grade distribution. In IK, the Multiple Indicator Kriging (Multiple IK) and Median Indicator Kriging (Median IK) methods could be involved due to the number of indicator thresholds. IK is not sensitive to high values. Here, we make a comparison between Median IK and Multiple IK as well as those with ordinary kriging (OK), which is a linear kriging method. Overall, we conclude that all of these methods are suitable for resource estimation among these methods, although the IK method is better for estimation in different categories of gold grades.

A simple but novel and applicable approach is proposed to solve the problem of smoothing effect of ordinary kriging estimate which is widely used in mining and earth sciences. It is based on transformation equation in which Z scores are derived from ordinary kriging estimates and then rescaled by the standard deviation of sample data and the sample mean is added to the result. It bears the great potential to reproduce the histogram and semivariogram of the primary data. Actually, raw data are transformed into normal scores in order to avoid asymmetry of ordinary kriging estimates. Thus ordinary kriging estimates are rescaled using the transformation equation and after that back-transformed into the original scale of measurement. For testing the proposed procedure stratified random samples have been drawn from an exhaustive data set. Corrected ordinary kriging estimates follow the semivariogram model and back-transformed values reproduce the sample histogram, while keeping local accuracy.
